THE COUNCIL OF IGBO COMMUNITIES

The Council of Igbo Communities is an umbrella group for a large number of Igbo State Unions and cultural associations. It is affilliated to Ohanaeze Ndi Igbo and promotes NdiIgbo.

The above mentioned assembly of Igbo Organisations, Groups and Associations, hereby, in discharging it’s responsibility to the Ndigbo in the UK, wish to inform  Ndigbo UK, of the progress so far about it’s activities since the election held in February 2002.

Since the Council’s inception SEVENTEEN years ago, the concept of its existence has been the PILLAR that held the Council together to this present time.

WHAT DOES THE COUNCIL OF IGBO COMMUNITIES ( THE IGBO COUNCIL) STAND FOR?

The Council of Igbo Communities is an assembly of all Igbo Community Organisations including Igbo associations; unions, societies, clubs and others howsoever named. As an instrument for unifying Igbo communities in the UK, the experiment of Igbo Council started in the autumn of 1991 following two gatherings in September of that year of Igbo leaders and people with Igwe Osita Agwuna III, The Igwe of Enugwu Ukwu.

By autumn 1991, there was no other organisation existing to bring the multiplicity of Igbo community organisations together. The Council has since September 1991 became the umbrella organisation bringing together all Igbo organisations already formed or yet to be formed in the UK in the future. It aims to build network where we share ideas, knowledge, co-operation with and strengthen these organisations to achieve their respective objectives in the interest of all Igbos home and abroad. Within this context, the Council works to promote the good image of Ndigbo and Nigeria for the benefit of our people in the host country and at home, and in the long interest of all Nigerians.

The Council exists to synthesise all igbo points of view in unity with key Igbo organisations,
Knowledgeable practisionals, professional and experienced individuals at home and abroad, set agenda for vital issues, express these with one clear voice and represent the Igbos effectively whenever considered necessary at the highest level. Vision is of essence in all Council’s deliberations and actions.

The Council is made up of delegates, notably the president/chairperson, secretary plus another delegate or any three member of their organisation (3 in all). In order to encourage membership, the Council invites organisations, groups, association, etc, to send their delegates as observers. The delegates will give feedback to their respective community. Individuals are also welcomed as observers and feedback to their communities.

IT MUST BE EMPHASISED THAT THE COUNCIL OF IGBO COMMUNITIES IS NOT AN INDIVIDUAL ORGANISATION – IT IS A FEDERATION OF ALL IGBO COMMUNITIES – AND THEREFORE DOES NOT COMPETE FOR INDIVIDUAL MEMBERSHIP WITH INDIVIDUAL IGBO COMMUNITY ORGANISATION.

EVERY IGBO COMMUNITY ORGANISATION IS ENCOURAGED TO STAY STRONG TO MAKE THE GRASS ROOT FIRM. MORE ORGANISATIONS ARE ENCOURAGED TO FORM IF GROUPS OF IGBO INDIVIDUALS FIND A NICHE THEY WISH TO SATISFY FOR NDIGBO. ONCE FORMED SUCH ORGANISATIONS ARE ENCOURAGED TO SEND THEIR DELEGATES TO THE COUNCIL, FOR IGBO UNITY.

The Council in AFFILIATION TO OHANEZE NDIGBO have one thing in common and that is IGBO UNITY, STRENGTH AND PROGRESS.
